What is this device and why is it important?

Precision RS41-SGP: You have found one of the world's most accurate meteorological instruments. This device measures atmospheric temperature, humidity, pressure, and, using its built-in GNSS/GPS system, determines both wind speed and wind direction every single second.
Explorer of the Stratosphere: Carried by a hydrogen balloon, it reaches altitudes of 30-35 km - approximately three times the cruising altitude of commercial airliners. In the thin air, the balloon expands until it bursts, and the radiosonde returns to Earth.
Vital data: The data transmitted by this instrument is fed directly into HungaroMet's computers. This information is essential for accurate weather models, aviation safety, and early warnings for severe storms, and the study of climatic conditions in the upper atmosphere.
Safe and Inert: The RS41-SGP radiosonde is a passive measuring tool. It contains no explosives, emits no harmful radiation, and uses a low-voltage battery that is harmless to people.

Is it reusable?

By returning the device, you contribute to a sustainable observation network. Intact units are refurbished and recalibrated for future missions, significantly reducing electronic waste. HungaroMet allows 'Receiver Pays' return method.

DRY & INTACT: Refurbishable!

If the white casing is clean, the sensor arm is intact, and the electronics are dry, the device can be refurbished.

WET OR BROKEN: E-waste

If the internal circuitry is shattered or has been submerged in water, please do not return it; dispose of it as electronic waste.

Please do not leave other parts in nature, as they can pose a strangulation hazard to wildlife.

Balloon Remnants: You may find pieces of the burst balloon still attached to the device. These are 100% natural and harmless latex, which poses no threat to humans. If possible, gather them and dispose of them in your household waste bin.
Unwinder: The device is equipped with a plastic unwinder mechanism. This component does not require special handling, please return it along with the radiosonde (without the string) or dispose of it in the recycling bin!
Handling the String: The string connecting the balloon can be easily cut with scissors. Please ensure the long string does not get tangled around your legs or arms.
Valve: The balloons are inflated through a special black valve, which is attached to the balloon with a white plastic ring. The valve connects the balloon to the unwinder attached to the radiosonde. The valve is also reusable, if possible, please remove any balloon residue from the valve and return the plastic ring and the black valve as well.
